Fire Control Radar Test System (FCRATS)

In September 2002, Total Quality Systems, Inc. (TQS), a business division of AES and a leading provider of engineering services to the DoD and commercial industry, was awarded the contract to upgrade the Fire Control Radar Test System (FCRATS) located at Hill AFB, Utah.

This system was originally designed and built using 1970/80s technology. Over time, it has performed well. However, as with any aging test equipment, replacing damaged or non-functional parts has become an increasing challenge in maintaining equipment functionality. The Government needs the equipment to be fully maintainable throughout the expected life of the F-16 and contracted TQS to replace and/or refurbish obsolete and unsupportable hardware by taking advantage of current technology and state-of-the-art equipment.

In the course of completing this project, obsolete computer, radio frequency and positioning electronic equipment was identified and replaced. The Radio Frequency room and other Government Furnished Equipment was retained as well, with minor repairs to the absorber made as required. Wiring changes to the positioner and new cables were made.

An entirely new software application test program was written by TQS software engineers to control the new equipment, monitor the testing, determine go/no-go results and move up to four axes of the positioner simultaneously. In addition, a software application was written to completely automate the periodic calibration and performance validation requirements.

Benefits

Preliminary results show over a 50% reduction in test cycle time.
The annual performance validation and calibration now requires only 4-6 hours instead of days.
Equipment fully supportable for the expected life of the F-16 program.
Troubleshooting and repair times have been greatly reduced due to the increase of speed in testing and operation of equipment.
